One of the largest dealers of Aqua-Yield nanoliquids shares their passion and excitement for innovative products

Penny Newman Grain Company is one of the oldest businesses in California, having grown from a Fresno mercantile store in 1878 to a leading merchant of grain, feed by-products, and innovative fertility inputs. The Farm Products division offers a portfolio of innovative fertility inputs that help growers improve their profitability through regenerative methods. The Penny Newman philosophy is to “to only focus on market segments in which we truly add value.” Aqua-Yield® products complement their product line, with a mission to reduce crop inputs, build soil health through biology, and reduce salt applied to the soil with traditional crop fertility.

Trials & Response

Penny Newman has been an authorized Aqua-Yield dealer for only a few years, but they have instantly seen the many benefits nanoliquids offer to both the grower, their crops, and soil health. Finn Telles, Sales and Marketing of Penny Newman Farm Products, is excited by the crop response his growers are seeing. He states, “With nanoliquid fertility, growers are seeing a difference in growth of their crops in just a 1-2 week time difference, both soil and foliar applied.”

Very focused on proving the products they offer, Penny Newman goes through rigorous product trials with soil and tissue samplings to make sure nutrient levels are up and meeting the constant needs of a growing crop. When Aqua-Yield® was first introduced to California growers, many started with a test trial using just a jug or two. Generally 4-6 oz of nanoliquid can cover an acre, so a little bit goes a long way. Telles states, “The level of support and expertise that came from the Aqua-Yield® team, the benefits, and the crop response pushed growers from applying just to a few acres to all of their acres. It doesn’t take long for growers to really see the uptake of nutrition. The science behind Aqua-Yield® nanoliquid technology, while complex, is actually quite simple. It makes sense and the proof is in the sale.”

No pressure, California growers!

California is known for its diverse specialty crops, and according to the USDA is the most productive agricultural state in the nation. California is the sole producer of a large number of specialty crops, produces half of US grown fruits, nuts and vegetables, and grows more than 400 commodity crops. The golden state also has some of the toughest farming regulations, which can be very challenging for growers when battling the nutrient needs of a crop, environmental issues, and mother nature.

One challenge is cutting back on the use of high nitrogen fertilizers: a contributing component of ground water contamination. As regulations stiffen, growers have found huge value in NanoN®; they can reduce the nitrogen load while supporting strong yields and growth. NanoN® uses Aqua-Yield® NanoShield® technology to improve nitrogen absorption. NanoN® can be added to any liquid fertilizer blend containing nitrogen to enhance uptake.

Telles states, “Many specialty crops also require calcium, and NanoCalSi™ is a great tool for that need.” NanoCalSi™ makes delivery of calcium possible when selective plant uptake restricts calcium absorption by the roots. Aqua-Yield® NanoShield® Technology is perfectly matched for calcium delivery on fruits, vegetables, and turf. NanoCalSi™ will also improve fruit set and uniform fruit development for higher quality.

Another favorite product, NanoPro®, helps growers cut back to the lower recommended levels of crop protection. “NanoPro® has been very effective with resistant weeds. Our growers often excitedly send pictures where they immediately see the effectiveness of burn down,” states Telles. NanoPro® can be added to any spray mixture to enhance plant uptake of specialty and generic crop protection

Farming often carries a heavy burden of stress and isolation. Studies consistently reveal that farmer suicide rates are alarmingly higher, ranging from 2 to 5 times the national average. Farmers face unique challenges—from natural disasters to financial uncertainties— all taking a toll on their mental health. It's time to stop the stigma surrounding mental wellness in agriculture and extend a hand to those who need support. After all, the future of agriculture depends on the well-being of its stewards. Why Farmers are at Risk: In rural communities, the taboo to start a conversation around mental health stifles and prevents those in need from seeking help. There's a common misconception that admitting to struggles is a sign of weakness, rather than a testament to human resilience. The pressures of financial instability, unpredictable weather, and the relentless demands of farming increases stress levels. When left unaddressed, this chronic stress can spiral into depression, enveloping individuals who contribute so much to our society. Signs Someone May Be Struggling: Recognizing the signs of mental health challenges is crucial for intervention. Changes in their behavior, withdrawal from their social interactions, increased accidents on the farm, neglect of animals, and a decline in personal appearance or farm upkeep can all indicate someone is struggling. By staying vigilant and observant, we can extend a helping hand to those in need. Ways to Take Action: It's not enough to encourage struggling farmers to seek help; we must also empower their loved ones to initiate conversations about mental health. Simple gestures like regular check-ins, offering assistance with farm tasks, or providing a listening ear can make a world of difference. These small acts of compassion can break through the walls of isolation and offer a glimmer of hope. Breaking the Stigma: Invite ways to have open dialogue and foster conversations about mental health within your farming communities. We can challenge misconceptions and pave the way for acceptance and support. As James Dixon of the Arkansas Farm Bureau aptly stated, “seeking help is an act of strength, not weakness”. It is this act of strength that saved his own life. Let's redefine resilience as the courage to ask for help when it's needed most.
