NANOTECHNOLOGY FOR PROTURF

TURF NANOTECH™

Increase plant uptake of liquid fertilizers and chemistries for better control

The way professional turfgrass managers deliver nutrients and active ingredients is about to change, just as it already has for those in agriculture and medicine. Our new products admittedly look just like any other liquid fertilizers you’ve tried: same jug, label, guaranteed analysis, made for turf, directions, rates, etc. The one difference though is Turf NanoTech products have an ingredient which allows them to perform unlike anything else: nanoparticles. The nanoparticles in all TNT products are designed to do one thing: deliver you control.

Our general application rate for NanoActivators is 0.2 oz. per 1000ft2. NanoFertilizers application rates vary based on desired nitrogen rates and analysis. Low use rates make TNT™ nanoliquids easy to use and incorporate into many spray programs.

Word is spreading about the benefits of Nanotechnology for professional turfgrass management. Golf course Superintendents and Grounds Managers from all sectors are learning about and preparing to try the nano-adjuvant NanoCharge in their own nutritional and pesticide spray mixes. 2023 Turfgrass Research results and demo trials have shown the benefits of adding NanoCharge, and at only 8.7oz and around $8 per acre it’s a valuable addition worth trying. Many thanks to those we have met across the lands at: NanoCon in Phoenix, Planet Turf - Educational program, British Columbia Golf Course Superintendents Conference in Victoria BC with the Brett Young team, Michigan Turfgrass Foundation’s annual conference and show. Next stop is GCSAA Conference in Phoenix - Booth #1444, see you there.

Turf NanoTech thanks the following University Turfgrass researchers for their 2023 work in trialing and advancing our understanding of how Nanotechnology can help professional turfgrass managers improve the uptake efficiencies of their Nutrients and Chemistries. The annual TNT “T-Fund” represents our ongoing commitment to supporting independent University research programs.

Results are in, after putting NanoCharge to the test in a research trial conducted at TX A&M this year NanoCharge was shown to improve nutrient uptake just as designed. The study's aim was to measure the percent plant increase of nitrogen and other important turf nutrients when nanotechnology was added to a spray solution. At issue is the known poor nutrient uptake inefficiencies of traditional foliar applications. Prior turfgrass research estimates creeping bentgrass putting green turf has only 31-56% foliar N uptake (from a 5 g N/m2 application) within 8 hours of application, with little more occurring thereafter (Steigler et al., 2013; Chang et al., 2020). Improving this rate of uptake with nano liquids would help turfgrass managers: optimize plant health, save money and reduce environmental losses. The TX A&M trial used 15N-labeled urea (0.2 lb. N/ 1000 sq. ft.) to track and recover nitrogen in the plant along with a micronutrient solution. These nutrient solutions were applied to the creeping bentgrass foliage either with or without NanoCharge at its standard rate of 0.2 oz/1000 sq.ft.. After applying, turf samples were analyzed for percent differences between those fertilizers treated with NanoCharge vs. the fertilizer alone. The data Table here clearly shows the percent increase in nutrients in the turfgrass which received NanoCharge in the spray solution. These great results will help turfgrass professionals understand the benefits of NanoCharge as a technology for improving nutrient use efficiencies when managing turf.

Product Use FAQs

  • Are TNT™ nanoliquids organic?

Short answer is no. While TNT™ promotes environmental stewardship through nanoliquid™ technology by enhancing uptake, its silica mineral composition is not considered organic.

  • What are TNT™ nanoparticles made of and where do they come from?

Nanoparticles are defined as mesoporous silica-based nanoscopic spheres, or particles (~100nm and less). We source mined Zeolites from ancient volcanic formations and then process them to our exact specifications, rates, and sizes. More simply, think of them as “mineral sponges'' with a high affinity for absorbing other molecules added to spray solutions.

  • What rate do I apply TNT™ nanoliquid products?

Our general application rate for Nano Activators is 0.2 oz. per 1000ft2, Nano Fertilizers vary based on desired nitrogen rates and analysis. Low use rates make TNT™ nanoliquids easy to use and incorporate into many spray programs.

  • What is the cost?

Roughly $1.00 per (5M) green for adding Nano Activators to fertility or pesticide spray solutions. Prices on the fertilizer products vary based on application rates.

  • Do I need to change my current fertility program?

You don’t have to change your program to add TNT™. Adding our nanoliquid™ products into your current fertility and turf protection program is easy. Our solutions enhance the efficiency of your current turf inputs without disrupting your current approach.

  • How can TNT™ nanoliquid™ products be applied?

TNT™ products can be applied with any application of liquid fertilizer or turf protection. TNT™ nanoliquids are truly easy to implement and are user friendly.

  • What is the shelf life of TNT™ products?

TNT™ nanoliquid™ products stay in suspension and will not fall out.

  • Can I mix TNT™ nanoliquid™ products with any turf input product?

TNT™ products are highly compatible with many turf input products. A compatibility test is recommended before applying combinations of this product with any other product. TNT™ liquid products are not intended to be used with dry fertilizers.

  • Can I use multiple TNT™ products in an application and/or throughout a growing season?

We generally recommend that products are chosen based on soil or in-season tissue testing as well as nutrient requirements of the specific turf variety and species. If there is a need to mix multiple nanoliquid products for one application, please consult with a TNT™ representative.

  • What order should I mix TNT™ Nano Activator products with other inputs?

    •  Fill tank
    • Condition/buffer water if needed
    • Add fertilizers/chemistries
    • Add TNT product
    • Add surfactants, spreaders/stickers
  • The Nano Activator rates for NanoFuse and NanoCharge seem very low at 0.2oz/1000ft, can I add more for an even better response?

There is no need to exceed the recommended label rates, adding more than specified won’t cause phytotoxicity-related harm but may actually lessen overall benefits as this may cause the nanoparticles to agglomerate (bind together) thus lowering their chemical potential.

Turf Response FAQs

  • Can TNT™ nanoliquid™ products be applied only in certain areas of the country?

Our nanoliquid™ technology has delivered success across the toughest proving grounds in North America and the world.

  • How have nanoliquid™ products been tested?

TNT™ has conducted a vigorous trial campaign to prove nanotechnology. TNT™ has also enlisted several universities and third-party cooperators ongoing to test products head-to-head with the industry standard fertility and turf protection programs in both turf and our other ag. product lines are tested in row crops.

  • How do TNT products improve upon basic nutrient diffusion from the soil solution into the turf plant?

The nanoparticles absorb and hold nutrients to help protect against environmental losses like immobilization, volatilization and precipitation. This allows for greater overall uptake into the plant both foliarly and through roots.

  • What turf response should I expect?

Look for several things when using TNT™ nanoliquids:

Turfgrass Fertility: When key nutrients and protectants are delivered to plants at the cellular level, expect a significant turf response. TNT™ has measured many quality aspects including improved tensile strength and increased density.

Pest Control (a.i.s): Improved results when applying standard label rates, or comparable results to standards when applying lower label rates.
