Before You Park the Combine: End-of-Season Checklist

Before you park the combine blog

Harvest season is among us! Many growers have spent countless hours, day and night, getting their crops out of their fields. Although many growers are anxious to see how their crops perform, many are also eager to get harvest 2026 in the books.

Although we may be ready to see harvest through, there are a few things to do before you push harvest out of your sight and mind.

Check Your Equipment

Without your equipment, you’re not going to get much done around the farm. That’s why it’s so crucial to maintain it and keep it in the best working condition possible. That being said, there are a few things to keep in mind before you park your equipment for the season:

  • Clean equipment: Be sure to clean all pieces of equipment to prevent rust and fire hazards, stop the spread of crop diseases, and preserve mechanical components.
  • Mechanical check: It’s always a good idea to inspect common wear points, check fluids and hydraulics, grease any parts that may need it, and make a list of repairs needed before spring.

Check Your Fields

This time of year, everyone is crunching numbers and reviewing their field outcomes. Whether you're happy with or disappointed in your results, it’s time to dig into them. Be sure to review your yield maps to better understand what’s going on both below and above ground.

Look for areas affected by compaction, moisture, nutrient stress, or inconsistent crop performance.

Check Your Efficiency

Take a closer look at your input investments. We all know that input bills weren’t cheap this year. It’s crucial to ask yourself the tough questions:

  • Did my nitrogen program perform?
  • Can I improve my nutrient efficiency or ROI?

If you aren't happy with your answers to either of those questions, it’s time to take note, make adjustments for next year, and learn from your past growing season. Why not improve every year?
