Defoliant Timing in Cotton Matters

This time of year, harvest is underway across the region for many crops. With that being said, cotton harvest is one of many occurrences happening. When it comes to cotton defoliation applications, it’s crucial to choose the right product and the right application timing so harvest can be as successful as possible.

Signs Cotton is Ready for Defoliation

There are many telltale signs that cotton crops are ready for defoliation. The most common are as follows:

• Heat units: Once a cotton crop has 850 to 900 DD60s after cutout, it has accumulated enough heat units to be ready for a defoliant. 
• Percent open boll: When 60% of bolls have opened, the crop is ready for a defoliant.
• Nodes above cracked boll (NACB): Count the nodes between the top cracked boll and the top harvestable boll. If there are 4 or fewer nodes, the field is probably ready for defoliation.
• Sharp-knife technique: Cut open the highest harvestable boll. It should be hard to cut, have folded cotyledons, no jelly-like material, and a dark seed coat.

Why Defoliation Timing Matters

When defoliants are applied at the right time, cotton crops can have a great response. On the flip side, if defoliants are applied with poor weather conditions or unfit crop conditions, the effects can be detrimental to the overall yield.

• If your crops are in a stressed state, their uptake will be poor, and the results will be poorer. Be sure your cotton isn’t stressed from common occurrences like droughts. 
• The weather plays a big role in cotton defoliant applications. These are most effective with high temperatures, high humidity, and intense sunlight. Be sure there’s at least one full day of nice weather in the forecast for the day after the application to increase leaf drop as much as possible. Temperatures warmer than 60 degrees are best, especially at night.
• Only defoliate what you can pick in a timely manner. Open cotton should not sit exposed to the elements for an extended period, as this can impact quality and yield.
