Getting Winter Wheat Right Starts at Planting

The Foundation Matters

Winter wheat spends months in the ground before it hits its stride. Everything that happens between planting and emergence sets the ceiling for yield potential. A good seedbed gives the seed consistent soil-to-seed contact, uniform depth, and access to moisture and nutrients. That’s the baseline.

But even a perfect seedbed won’t unlock full potential if fertility is off or if nutrients tie up in the soil before the plant can use them. That’s where a closer look at inputs  and how they perform at the molecular level can make a real difference.


Seedbed Conditions to Watch

  • Residue management: Heavy residue can cool soil and tie up nitrogen during breakdown. Uniform spreading and light incorporation help.
  • Soil temperature: Winter wheat germinates best when soil temps are 54–64°F at planting depth. Planting into warm, moist soil speeds emergence.
  • Seed depth consistency: Aim for 1–1.5 inches. Deeper planting in dry conditions is possible, but the crown needs consistent moisture.
  • Firmness: A firm seedbed prevents air pockets and keeps seed in contact with moisture. A loose bed dries out fast.


Fertility Timing & Nano-Yield Products

Starter fertility is common for winter wheat, but traditional nutrients can be inefficient, a portion ties up in the soil or leaches before the plant can take it up. Nano-Yield’s nanoliquid technology changes that by reducing particle size so nutrients move more easily into the plant.


Products to consider at planting:

  • NanoN+ — Designed to protect and carry nitrogen in liquid solution, improving efficiency and reducing waste. It can be added to your liquid starter or UAN. For less than $4.50/ac, it helps get more nitrogen into the plant when it matters most.
  • Nano PK — Works the same way with phosphorus and potassium, helping make those nutrients more available in cool, early-season soils when root systems are still developing.

These aren’t seed treatments in the traditional sense.  They're nanoliquids that can be tank-mixed with liquid starters or seed treatments to enhance nutrient uptake from day one.


What the Data Shows

A 2024 grower trial in North Central Kansas showed a visual impact from adding NanoN+ at planting in winter wheat. In corn, replicated university and Beck’s PFR trials have shown 5.5–12.5 bu/ac increases when NanoN+ was added to starter programs. The same technology applies to wheat, a better early nutrition, stronger root development, and more tillers heading into winter.



Putting It Together

  • Prepare a firm, clean seedbed with consistent depth.
  • Match planting timing to soil temperature and moisture.
  • Include a starter program with NanoN+ and/or Nano PK to improve early nutrient availability.
  • Monitor emergence and be ready with a top-dress plan come spring.

A strong foundation isn’t just about what’s under the seed, it’s about what you put with it. Nano-Yield products help bridge the gap between what’s in the soil and what the plant can actually use.
